Serial Console Usage

There are some environments such as server farms and labs in which use of the good old serial console can be very useful. One example would be when performing remote kickstarts as described in the document, “Complete Kickstart.” You might also need this when doing remote administration and a networking failure has occurred with the box so that regular SSH network access is not available.

There is a really good article by Van Emory, “Linux Serial Console HOWTO,” which covers the details of configuring your serial console in great detail. Although the assumptions are based on a specific motherboard and hardware configuration the document is general enough that it should work for almost any hardware.
